Obituary of Ella Louise Sumpter

Ella Louise Sumpter was born on Saturday, August 28, 1926 in Gadsden, Alabama; the daughter of the Oliver and Lecture (Williamson) Cherry. She was one of fifteen children raised in the South, but she found herself migrating to the North. Ella settled in the Boston area; starting in the South End and then she made subsequent moves to Cambridge; then to Roxbury, where she started raising her family on Tremont Street, to finally settle as the first black family to reside on Wilcock Street.

Ms. Ella formed a life with Sims Sumpter and as life took its course, she was blessed to have six wonderful children. Ms. Ella was a passionate and devoted; she had the Will-Power to succeed in anything that was placed before her, whether it be: her education or her family.

Ms. Ella's life journey reflects these traits. As she worked as Bus Monitor for the Boston Public School System, she found that she had patience with people and children, that transcends into her given purpose. This seed was just one example that Ms. Ella had more to give of herself. Thus she decided to further her education by attended Lesley College, where she graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Education in June of 1981.

Ms. Ella had the heart and mind of a Teacher and she worked to understand and meet people where they were. Special Education was her niche, to the point where she found the need & desire, to learn Sign Language. This gave her the ability to touch more hearts. Ms. Ella decided to teach at the Nathan Hale School, the Jackson Man Elementary School and the Horace Man School for the Deaf. She showed such love to her students that it had no choice but to be reciprocated by all.

MS. Ella was a traveler. She traveled internationally to Japan, Singapore, China and closer to home, Canada - Montreal and Nova Scotia she had ventured.  She did not take for granted the beauty of the United States; traveling all along the Eastern Seaboard: As far South as Florida & Georgia. She did not limit herself, you could find her even in Las Vegas, Nevada and California.

Ms. Ella loved to Shop, she had a fondness for buying clothes and shoes. But beyond the material things in life, she cherished her family and friends. She enjoyed having Dinners & Cookouts - Ms. Ella loved cooking. She was elated to be surrounded by all who attended her Holiday and Sunday dinners.

As the years went on, her children started their own lives and careers but Ms. Ella continued to offer of herself by raising many of her grandchildren, she invested in her Legacy.

Sadly Ms. Ella Louise Sumpter, at the age of 92, passed away on Thursday, November 22, 2018. She will be sorely missed by many. Ms. Ella leaves to cherish in her memory her Children: Mark Edward Sumpter, Vaughnda (Anthony) Payen, Wendell Sumpter, Cherry Ann Sumpter, Marchelle Sumpter & Michelle Sumpter; her Siblings: Roland Cherry, Dot (Houston)Byers, JC Cherry, Eugene (Allison), Earl Cherry, and Curtis (Rosamary)Cherry. Her Grandkids: Okimia Sumpter, Anthonine Payen, Angelique Payen, Sheri Walton, Little Vaughanda Walton, Gena Porter, Imari Jeffrey, Mark Sumpter Jr., Kevin Sumpter, Omar Robinson,Alexandra Hutchinson , Teneika Baxter, Ella Scales, Joe Wiggins. Her Great Grandchildren: Rakim Sumpter, Mike Carlson, Kennedy Walton Mitchell, A, Mark Sumpter III, Jeanette Jones, Savannah Sorel-Sumpter, Joseph Omar Robinson, Khairi Baxter - Awogboro, Kemrem Baxter,- Awogboro,  Kerah Baxter,- Awogboro, Kayden Baxter,- Awogboro, Kailyn Hope Johnson, Keishawnah Sumpter, Kenneth Canty-Holliday. Her Great Great Grandchild, Macio Sumpter. She also leaves her dearest friends: Missy Polly Deloatch, Anita Howard, Stephen Howard, Titiana Howard. Ms. Ella also leaves her a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
