Obituary of Mavis Wilson

Please share a memory of Mavis to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Mavis Wilson was born on October 20, 1928 in Port of Spain-Trinidad to the late Adeliade Woodley and Fitzgerald Harrison. She was the third of nine siblings. Mavis departed this life on June 19, 2019 in Brooklyn, New York where she resided.

Mavis attended Gonzalez E. C. School in Port of Spain-Trinidad. She came to the United States in the early 1950s and settled in Brooklyn New York. She was an outstanding, articulate seamstress who had the ability to make whatever garment was needed which included women's clothing and fabulous curtains.

She was a great cook and was well known for her excellent culinary skills. She enjoyed celebrating her birthdays, and she would cook a grand meal that everyone loved. Some of her specialties included a Trinidadian dish, Callou, which was her most favorite dish and she was also known for her special Christmas cake, "Trinidad Black Cake."

Mavis was a very caring person and would help others no matter what time of the day or night. Her guests were always given a well-rounded meal and would always leave with a bagged meal to take home. Every Christmas she would send a barrel to Trinidad to help many family members and friends. She did all of this alone and would never complain.

She was affectionately known to all as, "Mums". Wherever she resided, she had a positive impact in the community. She enjoyed giving advise to others and was responsible for helping many family members relocate to the United States. She never forgot her family and friends back in Trinidad and would always send barrels home with food and clothing to assist them. She also made sure her only son was taught some necessary life skills which included cooking, washing, starch and ironing. Her motto was, "Once you have flour, water and oil, you have a meal" and " I don't want any woman to make style on you." She emphasized the importance of self discipline, courage to explore and try new things and to be independent. She valued these ideas and passed them on to her son Trevor. She was also a deeply spiritual person and a member of the Anglican (Episcopal) church all her life. To this day Trevor values these words of wisdom and the role model she was which has played an important part in his personal formation as a Christian and citizen.

She leaves to mourn, her son Trevor Harrison (Brenda Harrison, Boston, MA); siblings, Audrey (New Jersey), Reynold (New York), Hollis (New York) and Garnett (Massachusetts); grandchildren, Ansel Castellano, Nisa Harrison, Stacia Castellano, Tashanda Harrison and Trevonne Harrison; great grandchildren, Maya Castellano, Dillon Blair, Cairon Harrison, Javon Harrison, Dalaina Vidal, Anasia Kelly; nieces and nephew, Patsy, Maureen, Nancy, Ann Marie, Nova, Randy, Garnett, Jr., Wendy, and a host of other nieces, nephews, and friends.
