02:43:25 Galaxy J7 Star: Thank you for sharing Kattie to us. Allowing us to become a part of her extended family. Without her vision for Women Inc. I would have not made it out of drugs and alcohol. I would not have my children or watch my grands grow up. Words cannot express my gratitude and gratefulness for unconditional love. She never gave up on me. I walked in Women Inc. as a child and came out a empowering woman. I thank God for her and all the staff throughout the years. Thank you again for sharing such a phenomenal Woman. Praying for God's comfort for you all. Respectfully, Vernesha Simpson 1989 -1991

Charlene Sears-Tolbefrt posted a condolence
Tuesday, August 18, 2020
First of all, I would like to extend my condolences to the family and sorrowing friends. August 18, 1986 (exactly 34 years ago today) I entered Women, Inc. I did not live in Boston but came from Orlando, Florida to enter a program I just happened to find while making phone calls. I know today I was destined to enter this program. It was the single best decision of my life, and Kattie Portis was the single greatest influence in my life. Her wide gapped tooth smile reminded me of my mother and and grandmother and I was immediately drawn to her in reverence and awe. I stayed at Women, Inc. 14 months. Fourteen of the hardest but the most empowering and life changing months of my life. There were a couple of incidents at Women, Inc. where Kattie personally stood up for me and went to bat on my behalf. Her actions literally saved my life! I admired Katie's fight on behalf of women and children and I too wanted to be a catalyst to help others.
After completing treatment, I started working at the Houston House (a spinoff of Women, Inc.) as a part-time counselor. I entered college and devoted my life to helping transform the lives of women and children. Eventually, I moved back home to Florida and brought my Women, Inc. experience to women in treatment centers and jails. Thirty-four years later I am still fighting the good fight. I owe my life to Kattie Portis. I owe who I am as a Black woman to Kattie Portis. When I think about the Power of ONE, I always think of her - the thousands of lives she affected - and the hundreds and thousands of lives helped and changed by many of the women that came out of Women, Inc.
There was a handmade poster on the group room wall at Women, Inc. that read "Beyond Your Wildest Dreams". Today I have a life beyond anything I could have hoped or imagined in August 1986 thanks to Kattie and Women's Inc. I am proud to be part of Kattie's Women, Inc legacy, and I will continue to demonstrate my gratitude to her and Women, Inc. by continuing to pay it forward! Again, my condolences to the family - a light as bright as her shall surely be missed.
With Love and Gratitude,
Charlene Sears-Tolbert

Hello family please keep my extended family in prayer. God called one of his angels home Kattie Portis Can I tell you about this lady right here. Kattie was a amazing woman. Kattie would help anyone financially, emotionally and physically in anyway.
Kattie Portis came into my life in 1983 I was a very young girl. Kattie became my daughter Laportia Portis Shante grandmother on June 5,1986. when I say she has never left my side when my mom passed away I mean it. She said something to me, she said was here and I am here I got you, don’t worry as long as I Kattie have breathe and air you and laportia will never have to worry. I had 2 more children that had no relationship to Kattie but she was nana Portis to them I later got married Kattie was there to pull my veil back to say I love you I am proud of you. I had 3 more children and again she was Nana Portis. There hasnt been a Christmas a birthday or any celebration that has happened for my children that she hasnt celebrated for them. Kattie has been the BEST nana to my babies. Although Kattie came into my life because her son Luther Portis and I had a daughter together. Kattie has been the BEST mother figure to me. I have never looked at Kattie as my daughter‘s grandmother she was my other mother. When my mom passed away Kattie was one of the first to be by my side. When i made the decision to move to Georgia I talked it over with Kattie. When things got hard here in Georgia Kattie said to me never feel like you will fail I am here always building me never letting me fail. I talk to her 2 weeks ago and it was hard for me hearing her sound the way she was. but when she said Ginger ii am tired I was broke because Kattie was such a fighter.
one of your favorite foods you had me make for you was your Caramel Cake and my collard greens.
Kattie i wanna say thank you so much for everything you have done for my children and I. I love you Its your time to rest and go onto your next job for god Keep being my angel and watching over us.

It was an honor and a privilege to work with Kattie as we spent many a day and night and many years working to raise funds to continue and expand the critical work of Women Inc. We truly caused "good trouble" in Washington. Memories that Kattie and I shared and laughed about for years.
In Kattie's name and memory I have contributed to the organization "Get Us PPE" a non profit that is working to supply our front line medical teams with protective gear..
I leave with this message as I am sure our paths will meet again….Maureen McMeekin
May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be ever at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face and the rainfall softly on your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of his hand.

Words are too small to express the impact that Kattie had on me, other women, the community that ranges from local to national, and leaders in doing the right thing with women, for women, for communities of color, for mothers and their children and their families. We have lost a powerful sister (if I dare call her that) but her voice, her inspiration, her vision, and her ability to call you out lovingly to do the right thing will be carried on by all those she touched. Her smile was all encompassing including those she did not agree with, but never be fooled by that smile when tough words needed to be said - she would say it with a smile and a force that had to be reckoned with. Thank you for your leadership, your vision, you never ending fight for and with those who did not yet know they had a voice, for never giving up, and for not letting us do less than what we are all called to do for our sisters and borthers, our community and our society. You will always be with us. Your light shines on!

Kattie, may you be resting in PEACE and POWER! You were all about both peace and power in life, in my life, and all our lives. Along with having been of one the founders of WEAVE, your brain child for women coming out of recovery to move to the next steps of literacy and education, you and Women, Inc, hosted/housed the work of the Coalition for Women's Safety--the first real multi-racial, multi-class formation of any kind in Boston--to address the lack of care, negligence, and incompetence of Boston Police Department regarding the murders of 13 Black women in winter and spring of 1979. Your leadership, ability to bring folks from all walks of live, and unequivocal love of Black women were the glue that held us together those months, and CWS spawned Support Group for Women's Safety--white feminist allies in Cambridge and Somerville who supported our work.
You were the light! Your laughter, your wisdom, your Dawn--all helped and led us to traverse a Dorchester and Roxbury and Jamaica Plain that were the sites of both principled struggles and deep divisions.
We will never ever forget you and all the lessons we learned from your leadership and your humanity and your love of Black women, a love deeply rooted in your own struggles and transformation and in your Dawn! With much love and respect and admiration, Margo

We would like to extend a heartfelt prayer to all the members of the Portis/Webb Family, during this most difficult and transitional time. We light this candle to pay tribute to a life ‘passed and a legacy revealed.
Keeping a light burning is our form of remembrance; signifying that her memory still lives on and burns bright. We pray that this memorial candle: celebrates the life of your loved one, brings peace and comfort to your family and loved ones, and eases some of the pain of your loss. We hope that your support system will be revealed; as you read the words of those who post their LOVE, send their cards & flowers or even their embrace while they pay their respect.
Being now like family, we hope you will see our genuine hearts and will understand that we are here; to listen & keep things confidential, to provide guidance & direct you to the appropriate resources to maneuver through the storm.
