Obituary of Effie Mae (Dixon) Morgan
Please share a memory of Effie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Effie Mae Morgan was born on June 4, 1937, in Fairfax Alabama to the late J. W. Morgan and Annie Lue Tucker. When Effie was a teenager her family migrated to Massachusetts for better job opportunities. At an early age she was precocious, curious and fun-loving. She was given the name ‘Pig’ by her maternal grandmother ‘Big Mama’ as term of endearment. Growing up in south Effie’s mother worked long hours so Effie spent a lot of time with her grandmother gardening, going to the market and helping out with the chores. ‘Big Mama’ was a spiritual praying woman that reared Effie up in the church, Effie instilled these values in her children.
Effie was always told by her grandmother that she would be a preacher or a Gospel singer. It was evident years later that Effie was on fire for the Lord, praising him through prayer, song and service at St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a faithful servant for over 60 years. She sang with the Gospel Chorus and Senior Choir, she also served on Missionary, Usher, Prayer Ward and Hospitality ministries.
Effie was a very fashionable person with a knack for coordinating her clothes, jewelry and shoes. Her fashion sense came in handy when she worked as a Sales Associate at Robells, Looking Good and Carol’s Cosmetics. She also loved working with children teaching, doing arts and crafts and singing. Effie worked for many years at Crispus Attucks Day Care Center before retiring. Although loving and nurturing she was stern when she had to be. Effie received Day Care teacher certification from Wheelock College.
Effie loved to dance and at every family gathering she would be the first one on the dance floor challenging us to a dance off. She loved to cook and every Sunday you were sure to get a good hot Southern meal. Effie loved her family and welcomed extended family and friends. She had a giving heart and would help anyone in need even if it were her last.
Effie was preceded in death by her father J. W. Morgan, mother Annie Lue Tucker, sisters Annie Lois Sledge, Retha Cooper, Gladys Crump and Addis Dobson. She is survived by her sister Mary Ann Dunn, daughters Brenda Morgan-Turner, Elaine Morgan, Barbara James, Loretta Morgan and Paulette Mcaffee, son Paul Morgan, son-in-law's Marvin Turner and Carvel James, grandchildren Tamika Morgan, Malik Morgan, Rahshea Morgan, Shauntay Morgan, Akilah Morgan-Davis, Khenijah Soberanis, Amari Morgan, Makyah Morgan-Clemons and Ashlee Perry, great grandchildren Izaiah Morgan and Zaniyah Morgan and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
As we eagerly wait for that day,
her memory will live on forever in our hearts.
