Obituary of Gwendolyn Elizabeth Godfrey
Please share a memory of Gwendolyn to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
A special day… December 2, 1941, Gwendolyn was born to the late Rembert and Katherine Williams in Wilmington, North Carolina. Gwendolyn was the eldest of four children born to her parents. The Williams moved to Boston when Gwendolyn was a young girl. She was affectionately known as “Nana” “Auntie Gwen” and “Puddin’ Nookie”. Her Father, and all her Aunts and Uncles called her “Puddin”, while her two brothers called her “Nookie” and “Nook”.
As a teenager Gwendolyn met and fell in love with Kenneth Louis Godfrey. Years later the two of them reunited as adults and became husband and wife.
Gwendolyn received her education from the Boston Public School, Lewis High School. She furthered her education by obtaining a license to establish and run “Paradise Home Day Care” which she ran with tender loving care. She continued to enhance her education by attending various seminars, then dabbled in buying and selling in the real estate market. One of her greatest loves was helping people and leading them to Christ. Gwendolyn loved her family and entertaining the masses with her very hospitable spirit. She took pride in hosting countless family gatherings in the South End, Mattapan and later in Springfield, MA. She was always helping someone and extending words of encouragement when necessary. She loved her earlier church home at New Covenant Christian Center as she opened her home to weekly “cell meetings” in the ‘80s just to help out. The SPIRIT OF HOSPITALITY was her greatest gift.
Gwendolyn departed this life on Monday, November 23, 2020. She is preceded in death by her husband: Kenneth Louis Godfrey, brother: Raymond Williams, Jr. and sister: Carol Fuller. She leaves to cherish her memory, her brother: Bernard Williams, her children; J. Josie Johnson, Joseph Johnson, Jr., Troy Johnson, Tiko Johnson and Kimberly Godfrey. Nine grandchildren: Shenia, Shatika, Tiarra, Ashanti, Tory “Puddin”, Born, Cody, Jamilla and Kymaunii. Five great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, many cousins and friends.
Gwendolyn will be sorely missed…
