Obituary of Manuel L. Cardoso

Manuel Do Livramento Correia Cardoso, also known as “Nenezinho” and affectionately known as “Papa’’ to many, was born September 14, 1939, and one of eight children to Filenio Jesus Cardoso and Etelvina Correia Cardoso. He was born in Sitio de Santo António freguesia de São Lourenço FOGO, Cabo Verde. On June 8, 1967, he immigrated to Angola. There, he worked for Caminho de Ferro de Benguela. On September 6, 1970, he married his sweetheart Candida. While in Angola, he had three sons, Ilidio, João and Jorge (deceased). On September 30, 1975, he left Angola and went back to Cabo Verde. On September 25, 1977 he landed in the United States of America with his family and joined his brothers and family in Boston, Massachusetts. He then had two daughters, Maria de Lurdes and Amarisa. He settled in Roxbury, where he became a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, worked various jobs, built a home with his family, and where he also built a tremendous amount of friendships. He loved playing Biska and Orin with his mother-in-law and sister-in-law, bike riding around his neighborhood in the summer with his daughter and granddaughter. He sat in his yard whether it was cold or hot out, as if he was guarding his home that he put sweat and tears into. He also enjoyed taking daily walks where he would stop to chat with neighbors. He enjoyed watching soccer, the news and novellas with his wife. The holidays were special as he enjoyed the experience of grocery shopping, playing loud music from his favorite artists, dancing, family visiting and the decorations. He was a collector, especially of string instruments, electric guitars, harmonicas, and flutes. Those who knew him well knew they could find rare items with him, as he prided himself in his home-operated “chada.” He prided himself in making sure his family was well taken care of and gave them the work ethic to create lives of their own. He was a man of strength and he fought hard. He instilled faith in God, knowledge, and discipline in himself and his loved ones. On April 1, 2021, Nenezinho was called to rest, he was 81 years old. We will never forget the amazing friend, brother, father, grandfather, and most importantly, the man. He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Candida Pereira Gibau Cardoso; his four children, Ilidio Pereira Cardoso, João Pereira Cardoso, Maria de Lurdes Cardoso Bien-Aimé and Amarisa Periera Cardoso; his son-in-law, Lyvinston T. Bien-Aimé; six grandchildren, Chanel Cardoso, Tianna Barbosa Cardoso, Kyla Leilani Cardoso Lamitie, Dejean Akia Cardoso, Nilah Hillela Bien-Aimé, and Obasi Ibraheem Bien-Aimé; two great-grandchildren, Jaylen Jayce Small and Bella Candida Small; three brothers, Natalio Correia Cardoso, João Jesus Correia Cardoso and Francisco Jesus Correia Cardoso; his mother-in-law, Maria Antonio Pereira Gibau; sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, god-children, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins, a tremendous amount of friends, and Trouble, who will miss Papa dearly.
