Born on December 22, 1924 in Sebring FL to William and Hettie George, he was the fourth eldest of ten children. He left home at the age of 14 and migrated north performing various jobs before entering the army at age 19. During his service in World War II as a soldier in the medical corps he achieved the rank of Staff Sargent. For his bravery during his tour of duty while stationed in Northern France, Belgium and Central Europe, he received 4 medals: American Theatre Service Medal, EAME Service Medal with 5 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal. After a brief employment period with Domino Sugar he became an entrepreneur and opened his own auto repair shop, Mel's Automatic Transmissions. In 1966, Melvin moved to Seattle WA where, for the next year, he worked as an aircraft mechanic for Boeing Airlines. He returned to Boston and on August 16, 1967, he joined Microwave Development Laboratories as a mechanical engineer. There, he was instrumental in helping the company develop the first radar detectors for automobiles. On January 1, 1990, he retired from Microwave Development Laboratories to pursue personal interests.
