To Carole, Family, Friends and Michael Curry,
Humbly submitting these few remarks for the freedom fighter we worked and served anchored at the Boston NAACP for so many years. In total agreement to the many outstanding challenges Michael mentioned in the Globe's article, but graciously ask to have the following items stay on our agendas as we continue to pursue and implement his legacy. "Lennie" worked tirelessly for us also: on - redlining - driving while black injustices and overpriced car insurance connected to our residential zip codes.. Leonard PERSEVERED and "stayed the course", as long as he could - he is passing the baton to the next long distance runner. He joined the choir of angles guiding and watching over us on this journey, as we continue to "march on, until victory is won!"
Know that you're always on our minds and in our prayers; we know that we will have comfort and peace as we reflect on his life, and thank God that you and your family shared him with us

Here is a report from the 1970s: Lenny Alkins was the most powerful non-elected person in the MA state house at the time, and more powerful than many elected officials. And everyone knew it. His discretion and loyalty were well known, his reputation was fearsome but he was approachable and fair.
He was a model of public service.

Lennie was a major influence when I joined the Dukakis Administration in 1983. He was a force in the State House when I arrived there and mentored me on how to navigate there. He was the longest serving president of the NAACP Boston Branch, which he served with distinction. But most of all he was a friend and colleague who will be missed. Rest In Peace my friend!
